Tracy was born on February 16, 1936 to Walter and Evelyn in Riverton, Wyoming. He grew up and attended and graduated from Riverton High School in 1954. He studied at Colorado State University and graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1960. Tracy married Phyllis Olson on December 18, 1957, they moved to Mitchell, Nebraska, following his graduation from CSU. To this marriage three children, daughter Brenda, and sons, Bart and Doug were born. In 1964, the Rhodes family moved to Buffalo, where Tracy purchased the Swift Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Rhodes, or affectionately known to most as Doc, served the Johnson County ranching community for over 30 years as he owned and operated Rhodes Veterinary Clinic. It was a family business as Phyllis was the bookkeeper and surgical nurse, and the kids were kennel help and janitors. Tracy and Phyllis sold the practice in 1990 but continued to work part time for many years. As a retirement project they purchased a ranch north of Buffalo and raised cattle and hay; they later purchased additional ranch land near Clearmont, WY.
Tracy loved and encouraged his three children to be well educated. All three graduated from Buffalo High School, then attended the University of Wyoming. Tragically, Brenda will killed in a car accident, and their son Doug died of cancer six weeks later, both in 1987. Their son, Bart, recently retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the US Air Force; but continues to work for the Department of Defense as a civilian employee.
Tracy served six years on the Wyoming State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine, with one year as president of the Wyoming Veterinary Medical Association, he also represented seven western states on the executive board of the American Veterinary Medical Association, an office that required considerable travel. As a Johnson County Commissioner, serving three, four-year terms. He was involved with the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, serving one year as president, Buffalo Golf Club, and Johnson County Cemetery Board, serving in multiple capacities and resigning in December 2017.
Doc is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis, his son, Bart Rhodes of Bellville, Illinois, and three grandchildren, Jordan, Colton and Parker. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Evelyn, daughter Brenda, and son Doug.
