Florence Emma Long was born on October 6, 1924 in Prosser, Nebraska to George and Oleva Portz. She started school in Prosser and then moved with her family to North Platte where she graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic School with the class of 1942. She was married on June 30, 1945 in North Platte to James Long and they made their home in North Platte. In 1950 they moved to Benkelman, Nebraska and in 1952 they moved to Alliance, Nebraska. In 1959 they moved back to North Platte and in 1960 they moved to Bridgeport, Nebraska where Florence was a Veterinary Assistant for 27 years. They retired in 1986 and in 1993 they moved to Buffalo, Wyoming. Jim passed away in February of 2008 and Florence continued living in Buffalo until her death.
She was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Catholic Women. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Florence was an avid quilter, embroiderer and antique collector.
She is survived by two sons, Steve Long and his wife Gayle of Bend, Oregon and Clay Long and his wife Deb of Brunswick, Missouri; two daughters, Deborah Long of Austin, Minnesota and Paula Jensen of Buffalo, ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son-in-law, four brothers and one sister.
