Elsie was born on August 18, 1918 to William and Rhoda Mackey at the family homestead near Teckla, Wyoming, a small former post office in the Thunder Basin, near present day Wright. She was the middle child, of eight siblings. She attended a country school through eighth grade and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1935. While attending high school she received “Normal Training”, a certificate that allowed her to teach school following graduation; she then taught in rural communities in north eastern Wyoming for several years. She worked for Gates Rubber in Denver during WWII, making fan belts. Elsie married Lee Tyrrell in Broadus, Montana on October 21, 1944. To this union was born two sons, Bill and Nick. After Lee’s discharge from the Marine Corp. they moved to Gillette and Riverton, each for a short time before moving to Buffalo, where Lee was an electrician and Elsie maintained the bookkeeping for the business. Elsie and Lee opened their home to multiple foster children for over fifteen years and maintained many meaningful relationships with them. Elsie and Lee divorced in 1978. In 1988 she married Fred Bard and moved to Sheridan where they were very active in the Sheridan Polka Club. After his death in 2000 she returned to Buffalo, where she lived until her death. Elsie was one of the longest active members of the First United Methodist Church in Buffalo, having joined in 1955.
Elsie loved spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing and searching for arrowheads and old glass bottles. She loved her family, children, music and dancing. She was an awesome grandmother and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son, Bill and his wife Joyce Tyrrell of Buffalo, and grandchildren, Kenli and Tyler Urruty of Westminster, Colorado and Mark Tyrrell of Portland, Oregon, sister Elizabeth Sauble of California, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, husband Fred, in 2000, and son, Nick.
